MSRP range: $42,900 - $55,000

It only took Genesis a few years to establish itself and create the GV70, an outstanding automobile. While it isn't a perfect car, it consistently delivers excellent performance and offers unbeatable value in the small luxury SUV segment. The GV70 is quick, cozy, functional, and fashionable.

Pros.
Cons.
  • Composed handling and ride.
  • Some of the inside controls may be difficult to access or operate.
  • Large cargo space.
  • More interior storage is needed for tiny goods.

The new little SUV from the South Korean premium Genesis brand is called the Genesis GV70. The smaller GV70 competes with other small luxury SUVs including the Acura RDX, BMW X3, Lexus NX, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and others in the lineup below the larger GV80.

The 2023 GV70 carries over with minimal alterations from its 2022 launch. The model is still available with two strong engine options, including a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and a turbocharged V6 engine with 375 horsepower, as well as standard all-wheel drive. The GV70 offers great value, just like other Genesis models. For thousands less than the competition with comparable equipment, it offers a thrilling driving experience, a high-quality interior, and a long list of premium extras.

Performance

The smooth and powerful powertrain of the GV70 is the foundation of its pleasurable driving experience. Power is available and simple to obtain from almost any point in the turbocharged V6's rev range. The GV70 went from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds during our test drive. When driving around town, the automatic transmission makes smooth shifts, but when the roads get interesting, it can turn up aggression with sharp, positive shifts.

The GV70 doesn't handle corners as sportily as a Porsche Macan, but it nevertheless reacts to your inputs logically and predictably. Additionally predictable, the pedal stroke feels natural, making it simple to come to a smooth stop. Overall, it is a speedy and smooth SUV, but it is not as athletic as some others.

Comfort

The GV70 is a fantastic SUV in large part because it is comfortable. The seats in our test vehicle offered a massage function in addition to being heated, ventilated, and adjustable in the front. The cushions on the back seats are likewise quite soft and have a lot of reclining capability. A self-adjusting adaptive suspension (common with the V6) adapts to the upcoming road conditions. While the ride isn't nearly as soft as the larger Genesis GV80s, it still manages to combine compliance and comfort admirably.

An easy-to-use dedicated touchscreen is available for the climate control. The intensity of the seat heating and cooling is almost unsurpassed, and the heated steering wheel was equally amazing. The luxury experience is completed by a quiet cabin, where dual-pane windows significantly reduce outside noise. Only very slight road noise could be heard on highly textured roads.

Interior

The GV70 has a sizable amount of contemporary technology. To begin with, modern driver assistance systems like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and collision prevention are all included as standard equipment. Only the surround-view camera system and blind-spot monitoring require an additional purchase, and even then, they are inexpensive because they are a part of a larger package. That package includes the enhanced 16-speaker Lexicon audio system, which is definitely worth the money.

The GV70's compact but roomy 14.5-inch central touchscreen is another basic feature. Although it supports smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, unlike an increasing number of new vehicles, it does not support wireless communication for these systems.

Four USB outlets, a wireless phone charger, and even a 110-volt standard outlet are just a few of the power options available to keep gadgets charged. The voice controls in the GV70 can only operate the navigation system, audio system, and phone, but they can understand a respectable amount of natural speech. A fingerprint scanner and a digital phone key are additional features that are available, but we were unable to evaluate their effectiveness.

Storage

At 28.9 cubic feet, the rear baggage area is exceptionally spacious and ranks right up there with the class-leading RDX and Jaguar F-Pace. The loading area is spacious, making it simple to carry heavier items. The rear seats can be folded flat from the cargo area. Based on your proximity, Genesis' smart trunk opens automatically.

The cabin has reasonable, though not particularly large, storage space. We like how the tandem cupholders keep out of the way of the driver controls and how big the central armrest bin is. You can charge one phone on the wireless charger while placing another one plugged in on top of it in the open cubby because it is deep and out of the way. Even though the glovebox and door pockets are modest in size, there are still adequate possibilities.

Installing child safety seats is simple because of the roomy back seat. It is simple to access the top tethers and anchors. However, the towing capacity is only 3,500 pounds, which is significantly less than the class average.

Fuel Economy

The EPA estimates the combined mileage for the V6-powered GV70 at 21 mpg. That's respectable, although some rivals are marginally more effective as a result of the use of a moderate hybrid system. On their 115-mile evaluation route, the reviewer drove a GV70 and got an average fuel economy of 20.2 mpg in heavier-than-normal traffic. Despite the traffic, we believe it will be difficult to meet the EPA estimate if you don't drive efficiently.

Value

When it comes to features, build quality, and price in the small luxury SUV market, the GV70 is unquestionably a value leader. The cabin isn't nearly as well-finished as a Mercedes-Benz or an Audi, but it's still not far behind. The only things we find missing are a unique touchscreen experience that is not a direct replica of other Hyundai or Kia products, and the carbon fiber trim has a slightly tacky appearance.

The situation improves even further when you include in Genesis' warranty. Nobody in this market can come close to matching the five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and ten-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranties. The duration of the roadside support is five years/unlimited miles, which is an extra year above most competitors. Additionally, Genesis offers three years or 36,000 miles of free maintenance.

Expert Advice

Genesis is taking risks, and it's working. The GV70 is a stunning vehicle that attracts more attention than others in its class, with the exception of the "crocodile overbite" hoodline which is difficult to ignore. It's not only the outside, either. The interior has a modern, well-thought-out design that exudes luxury.

The GV70 mostly supports its good-looking exterior with a dynamic driving experience that is enjoyable on a back road. The V6 engine is a treasure, and the way the transmission responds at various points along the comfort and performance categories  really impresses us.

Even though the 3.5T's greater power is alluring, a 2.5T model should have more than enough power and cost significantly less. The Select package, which includes practical items like ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and more, is where we'd allocate those savings.
