Brief History of the Audi Brand

Audi first came into the picture in the 19th century with the evolution of various and achieved milestones in car manufacturing, motorcycle, engine production, and motor racing.

1899: Founding Year

August Horch founded the first automobile company named August Horch & Cie in 1899. After a while, in 1909, he set up a new automobile company in Zwickau which has been operating under the same since 1910 as Audiwerke AG, Zwickau. It marks the birth of the modern company’s name.

1932: Four Rings

The interlocking rings symbolize the merger of four automobile manufacturers based in the Germany State of Saxony: AUDI, DKW, Horch & Wanderer, which became the Auto Union AG. Here are brief details of the roots of today’s Audi AG.

1945: The End & The Beginning

After the war ended in 1945, Auto Union AG was located in an area occupied by Soviet forces. They held the assets, dismantled the whole plant, and removed the company from the Commercial Register of the city in Chemnitz in 1948. In 1940/1950, Auto Union Gmbh was founded in Ingolstadt.

1971: Foundation of Brand Slogan

The brand was more focused and ahead of its time with the launch of NSU Ro 80; the car was way ahead of its time and technology advanced. The new advertising slogan was introduced in 1971, which became the critical message underlining the company's expertise “Vorsprung Durch Technik,” which means Advancement Through Technology.

1986: Unintended Acceleration Allegations

In 1986 people in the United States featured who had sued Audi after their Audi 5000 suffered from unintended acceleration. The unintended acceleration had linked to six deaths and 700 accidents between 1982 and 1987.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation found that most unintended acceleration cases were by driver error. A mild defect found in the idle stabilizer system caused only a minor acceleration and panic in the driver, contributing to the severity of the incident.

The Beginning of Audi’s Modern Era

Audi’s Modern Era was technologically advanced and innovative. In the 1980s, they launched the world’s first four-wheel drive sports coupe with a turbocharged Quattro engine. They shortened the name to Audi AG, where they shifted towards the luxury market.

In 1987, Audi launched the Audi 90, which looked elegant and superior, followed by the Audi 80, which shares the same looks as their grandfather’s car image.

Audi saw record-breaking sales during the 2000s, and it grew. By May 2011, Audi received record-breaking sales in May 2011 and produced vehicles in seven countries worldwide. Audi is a prestigious brand with their German counterparts, Mercedes and BMW. They have innovated the technology and cars by adding diesel technology, aluminum bodies, and CVT and launching unique SUVs. Audi announced the new vehicles in the flagship SUV for the coming years.
