The Fallen Soldier Of SUVs

Hummer (stylized as HUMMER) is a truck and SUV brand that was launched in 1992 when AM General began marketing a civilian variant of the M998 Humvee. Hummer was dropped in 2010, but it was revived as a GMC sub-brand in 2020. General Motors (GM) bought the Hummer brand from AM General in 1998 and sold three vehicles: the original Hummer H1, which was based on the military Humvee, as well as the subsequent H2 and H3 versions, which were built on smaller, civilian-market GM chassis.

AM General sold the brand name to General Motors in December 1999, although the vehicles were still manufactured. GM was in charge of marketing and distribution for all Hummers produced by AM General. After a while, GM also introduced two of its own design models, the H2 and H3, and dubbed the original car the H1. AM General continued to produce the H1 until it was phased out in 2006, and GM hired them to produce the H2. On June 3, 2008, one day before GM's annual shareholder meeting, Rick Wagoner, GM's CEO at the time, stated that the brand was being examined and might be sold, have the manufacturing line totally revamped, or be discontinued.

As part of General Motor’s bankruptcy announcement on June 1, 2009, the firm announced that the Hummer brand would be discontinued. The corporation stated that it would entertain bids for all or parts of the assets. As a result, Raser Technologies, an American corporation, and numerous others expressed interest in purchasing the company. However, on April 7, 2010, General Motors announced that it was discontinuing the Hummer SUV brand and giving generous incentives in order to unload the last 2,200 cars.

The nameplate returns to the market for the 2022 model year as an electric pickup truck and SUV type offered under the GMC brand as the "GMC Hummer EV." After a $2.2 billion investment to construct a range of all-electric cars in GM's Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, pre-production versions of the EV commenced in November 2021.

GMC Hummer EV

Starting at $87,000

We never imagined we'd see a brand-new Hummer on American highways again, but the off-road brand was revived last year as an electric pickup truck named the GMC Hummer EV. This is not a flimsy, budget-conscious model. It has a 1000-hp electric drivetrain, can reach 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, and can brute-force its way through almost any terrain. The Hummer EV can more easily maneuver around obstacles, such as stones or hatchbacks, thanks to a rear-wheel steering system, and it can even drive sideways utilizing its innovative Crab driving mode. The Hummer EV is more of a toy than a tool. Next up will be an SUV version of the Hummer EV, as well as more practical EV trucks from GMC and sister-brand Chevrolet.

Hummer H2

The Hummer H2 had an unrivaled ability to handle difficult terrain, and while it wasn't a bad performer on paved roads considering its shape and size, many of its competitors are far more sophisticated and nimble. The EPA did not run fuel economy testing on the H2, which was classified as a heavy-duty vehicle, recording 10 mpg in city traffic and a touch more on the interstate, which is low even for a huge SUV. A 6.2-liter V8 with 393 horsepower powers all four wheels, which testers say is plenty of power to move the more than three-ton H2. Aside from its off-road abilities, the H2 can tow up to 8,200 pounds, which is enough, but there are lots of more economical options.

Hummer H3

The Hummer H3 offers exceptional off-road prowess in a unique and tough design. Because it is so huge, it can be difficult to manage, and it has average highway performance. Add to that the Hummer's poor safety ratings and low fuel efficiency projections, and it's easy to see why it ranks so poorly in its class. The Hummer H3 is offered in four trim levels and comes standard with four-wheel drive. The base and Adventure trims are equipped with an inline five-cylinder engine and a manual transmission, while higher trims are equipped with an automatic transmission and an optional V8 engine. Bluetooth, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, and a six-speaker audio system are standard amenities, but depending on the model, you may discover additional premium options like leather upholstery, heated front seats, and GPS.
